Russia and football?! They fit together – especially in cinema! Historical and romantic comedies, controversial and socially critical dramas all revolving around the game of football are among the many types of films featured in this component of the festival’s program. All films are on view to the public from March 23-28 in the Russischen Haus and the Babylon cinema.

Two feature films including KOROBKA and KICKING OFF – ANSTOSS ZUR 3. HALBZEIT deal with pressing current issues. ‘Korobka’ addresses xenophobia amongst the youth generation and ‘Kicking Off’ offers an insight into the brutality of the Russian hooligan scene.

Two further films are based on the history of the so-called ‘Game of Death’ in Kiev in 1942 between Soviet prisoners of war and Nazi German soldiers. With differing cinematic approaches, TRETIY TAYM from the year 1962 and MATCH from 2012 make for a fascinating comparison.

Also based on historical events are the 1975 comedy THE SWALLOW which recounts the beginnings of football in the Caucasus region and the drama GARPASTUM by director Alexej German Jr., whose most recent film competed in the Berlinale awards.

Suitable for the entire family is the comedy LUCKY TROUBLE which features the superstar Milla Jovovich in its leading role.
