Thursday, 22 March 2018

Hertha BSC’s manager Michael Preetz, Alba Berlin’s vice president and film scholar Henning Harnisch, the Italian correspondent for all things football Birgit Schönau and the festival director of Offside Fest from Barcelona make up the jury that will decide on which film will be awarded the first ever 11mm Jury Award.

Six of this year’s films are in the running.

Of these six, two address the theme ‘Football and Power.’ The first is the festival’s opening film ‘The Workers Cup’, which follows the diverse laborers who are working to construct the World Cup stadiums in Qatar, the host country of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The second is ‘Men in the Arena’ about two Somali national players that, despite unimaginable obstacles, manage to follow their dreams to become professional footballers.

Out of England, the portrait about a legend, ‘George Best: All By Himself’ and out of Italy, the documentary about football-playing psychiatric patients, ‘Crazy for football,’ both are eligible for the win.

Last but not least, ‘Korobka,’ one of the films from the ‘Football in Russian Cinema’ series as well as the Swiss comedy ‘Flitzer’ are also contenders on the list.

The new prize will be awarded by the jury on 26.03. during the ‘11mm shortkicks-Gala’.
