Women's Football worldwide

Thursday, 11 April 2019

US-filmmaker Megan Shutzer was guest at the 11mm football film festival. We screened her documentary about female football players on east-African island Zanzibar. What a story: When a foreign female football team visited the island in the eighties, the politicians of Zanzibar did not want to embarrass their guests and quickly hired athletes from other sports to represent a national team of Zanzibar - they were then no longer restrained and the first women's team was born. And the film of Megan Shutzer also shows us the successors.

Megan Shutzer: "I was so impressed by the festival! Not only the number of films, and the quality, but the team that rallies together to make the festival happen and the community that shows up. More than anything, it was so heartening to see the audience in attendance and their enthusiasm for these stories. Thank you for welcoming me and the New Generation Queens film from Zanzibar."

Her film was presented together with the documentary "Women's Football In Kabul" by the organization "Champions Without Borders". The NGO advocates intercultural sports opportunities for refugees. On stage, women from Iran and Kosovo reported on their new experiences with football here in Berlin.
