What do have Paul Breitner, Éric Cantona, Franz Beckenbauer and Pelé in common? Right, all four of them are former professional football players. However, apart from extremely successful careers on the green turf they had as well big appearances at red carpet events! The audience of the international football film-festival „11 mm“ can take a close look at what has become of these ventures. “Play-acting footballers" is one focus of the festival, taking place this year for the 17th time.

"We have been toying for years with the idea of a film series like this", festival manager Birger Schmidt explains. "The range of feature films in which professional footballers play an important role is wider as one might assume." In addition to the appearances on the big screen the festival organisers expect guests who will tell live stories about their experiences both on the football field and the big screen.

The 11 mm festival opens on Thursday, 15. October 2020 with the german documentary "Men of Hope". The filmmakers Till Derenbach and Andreas Fröhlich accompany the afghan football team and their german-croatian coach Petar Šegrt on their way through qualification for the Asia Cup 2019. The filmmakers discovered by chance the story of the "most dangerous football coach jobs in the world" in a newspaper article.

"'Men of Hope' tells quite impressively about the energy and integrating power that is released through the love for football, against all odds", Schmidt remarks. "We consider it our most important task to provide a stage for these stories." Peter Šegrt, nowadays coach of the national football team of the Maldives, and the two directors of the film will be present at the opening of the festival in Berlin.

The second focus of the festival deals with the specific role of goalkeepers. The film series is opened with the German premiere of the dutch documentary "Keeper". „In his film, director Johan Kramer accompanies goalkeepers from different dutch leagues. A little boy and the burden of the big responsibility play a big role as well as a highly talented female footballer who dares to take the big step into a foreign country in order to realise the dream of the Champions league“ the festival manager explains.

The world’s biggest football film-festival „11 mm“ takes place from 15 to 19 Oktober 2020. Around 60 international movies, documentaries and shorts will be shown, reflecting cultural and social backgrounds of football.

The festival is organised by the Berlin Association for sport & culture "Brot & Spiele e.V.". "11mm – 17. international football film festival" is presented by the DFB-Kulturstiftung. The main sponsor is DAZN.
