Final whistle for the 13th 11mm International Film Festival

The French short film Sur la touche wins the shortkicks competition; the German documentary Zweikämpfer voted the people's favorite.

The thirteen edition of the 11mm International Football Film Festival came to its conclusion on Monday evening with the handing out of the awards and the shortkicks gala. After five days that contained more than 70 short and feature-length films, international guests and enthusiastic audiences, the main cinema at Babylon Mitte was once again nearly sold out for the gala.

The winner of the shortkicks competition was the French entry Sur la touche (Hortense Gélinet), which made its Germany premiere at the festival. This witty look at the role of football in a couple's relationships garnered the most points from the shortkicks jury. Second place went to Padres Hooligans (Spain, world premiere; Alba Gómez, Alba Cid, Sarah Zelich) while Twelfth Man (Britain, Duane Hopkins) took third.

Moderated by Shelly Kupferberg, the competition pitted nine short football films against one another. The winner was chosen by the illustrious 11mm shortkicks jury, which this year included World Cup and European Championship winner Ariane Hingst, World Cup winner Thomas Berthold, actors Eva Löbau and Heiko Pinkowski, and Hertha Berlin defender Sebastian Langkamp.

The gala also saw the people's choice award for feature-length films, the Golden 11, went to the German documentary Zweikämpfer by director Mehdi Benhadj-Djilali. The moving portrait of out-of-work football professionals wondering what to do next in life conquered the hearts of audiences. Benhadj-Djilali, a Berlin native, accepted the prize together with his protagonist Nico Frommer from Wolfsburg defender Naldo.

Second place in the popular vote went to the documentary film Im Derbydreieck by Milan Skrobanek, while third also went to a German documentary Es war Liebe - ein Porträt über ein Leben für den Fußball by Steffen Kuttner, which focuses on the former Union Berlin and Dynamo Dresden fan favorite Cristian Fiél.
