More than a game

On March 21, streetfootballworld proudly presented the movie “Streetkids United II - The Girls From Rio” at the Babylon Cinema in Berlin. It tells the story of the Brazilian girls’ team that took part in the Street Child World Cup 2014 in Rio de Janeiro. Rio hosted 26 teams of street children from all over the globe and showed the world that “they are somebody”.

No eye stayed dry while getting to know the life stories of the girls who live in the most dangerous Favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Although they face struggles in their everyday lives – witnessing fights, shooting and violence – their abundant energy and positivity touched the hearts of everyone in attendance.

The movie demonstrates the impact that this kind of event can have. The “Girls from Rio” succeeded in winning the Street Child World Cup. Their experience of accomplishment and acceptance has led to many of the girls pursuing football, enrolling in education and finding employment.

We hope that Festival 16 will be a similar experience for the participants, showing them that they, too, “can be someone” and that they, too, are important.
