Referees in Focus

Saturday, 08 April 2017

What constitutes a false decision – and are there fortuitous false decisions in football? At the “Referees in Focus” talk, former Bundesliga professional Nico Frommer, referees Ammar Sahar and Stegan Schumacher from the Berlin city league, journalist Frieder Pfeiffer, and Stefan Krankenhagen from the University of Hildesheim discussed spectacular refereeing mistakes like the “Wembley-Tor” (England’s dubious goal against Germany in the 1966 World Cup Final) and the “Wembley-Revenge” (Lampard’s unawarded goal for England against Germany in the second round of the 2010 World Cup). The panel also considered the animosities and challenges faced by referees in the amateur leagues.

The encouraging example of Ammar Sahar, however, who two years after fleeing from Syria now referees in the highest amateur league in Berlin, ensured the evening retained an amicable and optimistic atmosphere.
